Frequently Asked Questions About Railings

It's hard to know everything about Räcken, but we do. Browse our FAQs or contact one of our specialists, who are always there to help you.

Fundera på funktion (vindskydd, säkerhet, utsikt), stil, underhåll, material och vilka regler som gäller för höjd och öppningar.

Yes, we don’t have any standard sizes that you have to conform to. Every railing for a patio or balcony is manufactured exactly according to the measurements you specify in our configurator. We calculate section widths and glass dimensions down to the millimeter so that you get a perfect result without having to cut anything on site. This is one of the biggest advantages of ordering a custom-made railing.

That's possible, but cables can be climbed on and are therefore not recommended for use on stairs. Glass or vertical bars are safer options.

Balcony Railings – Dimensions, Height, Regulations, and Materials

Balcony railings are our best-selling category. With us, you can build balcony railings in a variety of styles—from transparent glass railings that preserve the view of the garden to classic railings with vertical or horizontal slats made of wood, aluminum, or stainless steel. The most common choice for a typical single-family home patio is a railing with a height of 900 mm, while a raised patio with a drop height exceeding 3 meters requires a height of 1,100 mm, according to the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning.

Building a balcony railing always starts with taking the right measurements—the length of the balcony’s front edge, the height from the deck surface, and any angles at the corners. Enter the measurements in our configurator to get an exact price with free delivery. For more detailed information on how to choose the right balcony railing, read our balcony guide.

Popular designs for patio railings include:

  • Balcony railing slats (vertical) – classic and timeless, popular for single-family homes and functionalist-style houses.
  • Horizontal balcony railing —modern and horizontal, complements modern facades in gray or black.
  • Glass balcony railing – for an unobstructed view and functional wind protection in a single design.
  • Railing around the patio – a complete enclosure that follows the shape of the patio, even at the corners.

Stair railings – indoor and outdoor

Stair railings differ from other railings in several ways: they serve both as fall protection and as handrails, their slope follows the angle of the stairs, and indoor environments have different requirements than outdoor ones. We manufacture outdoor stair railings in acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316) that can withstand rain and frost, as well as indoor stair railings in aluminum, stainless steel, or with warmer wooden accents for a softer grip.

The standard height for stair railings is 900 mm, measured vertically from the stair nosing. On public staircases and in apartment buildings, 1,100 mm is often required, even with a lower head height. We’re happy to add a handrail in wood or stainless steel—the standard grip width of 38–45 mm fits most hands.

For more information, read our staircase guide.

Balcony and French balcony railings

Balcony railings are subject to stricter regulations than ground-level terraces because the fall height almost always exceeds 3 meters—in which case a railing height of 1,100 mm is required according to BBR. We manufacture balcony railings that meet the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s requirements across the entire range of designs—from classic railings with vertical balusters to modern glass railings that maximize views and natural light. For condominiums, rental apartments, and multi-family buildings, the board’s approval is always required before placing an order, as the railing is considered a facade modification.

A railing for a French balcony is a special type where the railing is installed directly in front of a patio door without a protruding floor. In this case, the railing—and possibly the glass—serves as the primary fall protection, which means stricter strength requirements. For glass French balconies, we use 12.76 mm tempered and laminated glass, which is strong enough to serve as the entire barrier against the fall height.

For more information, read our balcony guide.

Privacy screens and windbreaks for balcony railings and patios

For many balcony and patio owners, privacy and wind protection are just as important as fall protection itself. A glass railing in an opal (frosted) or gray finish fulfills both functions in a single design—it blocks the line of sight from neighbors and passersby without blocking out the light, while also breaking up the wind so that the outdoor space remains usable even in windy conditions.

Privacy screens for balcony railings are one of the most sought-after solutions in apartment buildings, especially in condominium associations where all balconies must have the same design. Windbreaks for balcony railings work best when the railing is full height (1,100 mm), since the wind is strongest at ankle and knee level on a balcony.

Materials and Design – From Glass to Stainless Steel and Wire

Our product line gives you the freedom to combine materials such as glass, aluminum, stainless steel, and wire to complement your home’s architecture. You can influence the character of the railing through your choice of top rail and handrail, which are crucial for both function and appearance on a staircase or deck.

  • Glass railings —for an unobstructed view, privacy, and wind protection all in one design.
  • Aluminum railings – lightweight, maintenance-free, and powder-coated in RAL colors.
  • Stainless steel railings – timeless and durable, made of AISI 316 acid-resistant steel for coastal environments.
  • Wire railings – a discreet barrier with minimal visual impact (not recommended as fall protection in areas frequented by children).
  • Handrail posts and crossbars— choose from wood, stainless steel, or aluminum.

For more detailed information about all types of railings and materials, read our railing guide.

Railing Height and Regulations According to the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning (BBR)

Railings are regulated by the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning's Building Regulations (BBR) and must meet specific requirements regarding height, openings, and load-bearing capacity. Here is a summary of the rules:

  • Railing height: At least 900 mm for a standard fall height; at least 1,100 mm for a fall height exceeding 3 meters (applies to balconies, rooftop terraces, and similar areas).
  • Openings: No vertical openings may exceed 100 mm in areas where children under 12 years of age are present.
  • No Climbing: The structure must be designed so that it does not encourage climbing—horizontal crossbars should be avoided in areas where children play.
  • Load: The railing must be able to withstand the horizontal load that occurs when an adult leans against it.

We ensure that your chosen railing complies with the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning’s requirements through proper sizing, safety-rated (laminated) glass, and clear labeling of usage classes (A+, A, B, or C) directly in the configurator. The requirements for balcony railings depend on your balcony’s drop height—the configurator automatically calculates whether the railing meets BBR standards based on the measurements you provide.

Keep in mind that the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning’s building codes are updated periodically—if in doubt, always check the latest version on the Board’s website. For more information on regulations and safety, read our safety guide.
