Frequently Asked Questions About Arcus

Browse our frequently asked questions and answers, or contact one of our specialists, who are always here to help you.

Absolutely. Aluminum is perfectly suited for the Nordic climate, with its snow, rain, and wide temperature fluctuations. The material doesn’t rust, and our powder coating has been tested to withstand both moisture and cold without cracking.

An aluminum railing requires significantly less maintenance than a wooden railing, which needs to be repainted, or a stainless steel railing, which can develop surface rust.

How often you need to clean your glass railing depends on the environment. In urban areas or near the ocean, it may need to be cleaned 1–3 times a year to remove salt and exhaust fumes. On a sheltered patio, a thorough cleaning during spring cleaning is usually enough to maintain its transparency.

Yes, your choices regarding mounting, railing type, and glass thickness affect the service class of the railing. For example, in certain designs, a side-mounted railing often provides greater stability than a top-mounted one, and thicker glass increases the railing’s ability to withstand heavy loads.

We use only laminated safety glass in our glass railings with aluminum posts. It consists of two panes of glass with a tough plastic interlayer; if the glass were to break, the interlayer holds the shards together so that no one falls through or is injured. For exposed locations or great heights, we also offer tempered laminated glass, which provides extra strength against wind and impact.

Yes, aluminum is one of the most versatile materials we have. Thanks to its natural resistance to corrosion, it’s an excellent choice for outdoor railings on a patio or balcony.

At the same time, its sleek finish makes it just as suitable as an indoor railing in modern homes, where people want an easy-to-maintain and stylish solution.

It works perfectly. Building a glass railing without a top rail is a major trend for those seeking a minimalist look and a completely unobstructed view. It creates a modern “infinity” feel.

Keep in mind, however, that if you choose not to install a top rail on a railing with posts, stricter requirements apply to the thickness of the glass, and you must select tempered laminated glass to ensure the stability of the railing’s top edge.

Yes, absolutely. We offer what’s known as custom-cut glass, which means we can cut the glass to your exact specifications. This is often necessary if you’re installing a glass railing on a staircase or a slope where the glass needs to follow a specific angle or incline.

By having the glass custom-cut, you’ll get a perfect fit that creates a professional, tailor-made look.

Yes, our system automatically calculates the sections so that they are as symmetrical as possible based on the overall dimensions you provided for your railing.

Installation

How to Install a Glass Railing with Aluminum Posts

Installing a glass railing with aluminum posts doesn't have to be difficult, even if you've never installed a railing before. Arcus is assembled using posts that are first secured to the subfloor; then, the glass panels and any optional accessories are installed according to the instructions.

Here's how it works:

  1. Measure and mark where the posts should be placed
  2. Secure the aluminum posts to the substrate according to the selected mounting method
  3. Install the glass panels in the posts' mounts
  4. Adjust as needed and make sure the railing is stable
  5. If you have chosen a crossbar, install it according to the instructions

Mounting Options for Your Project

  • Top mounting – screwed directly into the floor or deck.
  • Side mounting – attaches to the outside of the edge to save space.
  • Bracket mount – a solution that makes it easier to adjust the height during installation.

Instructional Videos

Below are clips from some of our installation videos. Once you've placed your order, you'll have access to videos that show you exactly how to install the railing based on the details you've selected.

Quality & Safety

Certified Manufacturing

Arcus is designed and manufactured at our facility in Ängelholm, where we have full control over material selection and production. By manufacturing in-house, we ensure that every railing meets the safety requirements for load-bearing construction products made of aluminum and glass. Every order is delivered with a declaration of performance.

The manufacturing process is certified in accordance with EN 1090-1 and complies with applicable Eurocodes for load-bearing capacity. Production is continuously monitored by RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden), which is responsible for external verification of traceability and quality. The system undergoes extensive load testing to ensure a safe solution in both private homes and public spaces.

Technical Information

Dimensions, Specifications, and Documentation

Here you'll find technical specifications, dimensions, installation instructions, and performance declarations for Arcus.

This information provides a clear picture of how the railing is constructed and helps you plan, compare, and install the right solution for your project.

Technical Details

Load-tested posts
The posts have been tested with top and exterior fastenings on wooden substrates and can withstand a load of 0.5–1.0 kN/m.

Square 50×50 mm
Square aluminum posts and crossbars measuring 50×50 mm.

Surface coating: 20 µm
Our aluminum profiles are anodized. This is the same principle used on the mast of a sailboat, which is resistant to wind and weather.

Sheet thickness: 2.5 mm

8.76 mm laminated glass
Two 4-millimeter glass panes with a plastic film in between. If the glass were to break, the plastic film would keep the pieces held together as a single unit. Comes with ground and polished edges.

8.76 mm tempered laminated glass
Same construction as our standard laminated glass, but with two tempered glass panes instead. We recommend this glass for environments where the railing may be exposed to repeated external stresses. Comes with ground and polished edges.

Glass Options (Color)
When you design your railing, you also choose the type of glass you want. You can choose between clear glass or tinted slats in gray or opal (tinted or frosted film between the glass panels).

Aluminum glass trim
A U-shaped aluminum profile (14×12 mm) is attached to the top of the glass with adhesive. Surface coating: 20 µ.

Symmetrical Sections
When you enter your measurements in our configurator, you always enter the edge measurements at the location where you want the railing installed. Our configurator then makes the necessary adjustments. We then customize the section dimensions for your railing so that each section on each side is the same length. In other words, we adapt the railing to your measurements—not the other way around.

Selectable railing height
In the configurator, you can select the height of your railing, ranging from 800 to 1100 mm, measured from the floor to the top of the railing. According to Boverket standards, railings must be 1100 mm high in areas where the risk of a fall exceeds 3 meters.

Customized to the Millimeter When you provide your measurements, we ask that you be precise to the millimeter. We craft your railing to the millimeter so that it fits perfectly in the spot where you want to install it.

Complete Kits Our shipment includes everything you need for assembly. In addition to posts, glass, and crossbars, it also includes all screws, drill bits, and sockets, as well as any special tools. If you have a screwdriver, a wrench, a folding rule, and a level, you really don’t need anything else.

Assembly Videos and Instructions
The videos show various steps to help you with your assembly. Our assembly tips and videos are customized for each order. In other words, these are not general descriptions but are tailored specifically to your order.

Mounting on top of
The base is secured to the floor with 4 screws.

External Mounting
The post is secured with two screws on the side, directly against the mounting surface.

Selectable Mounting Heights
If you choose surface mounting, you also have the option to select the mounting height. You can have the post extend downward by 350 mm, 250 mm, 195 mm, or 145 mm. If possible, a larger dimension is preferable. The mounting height may affect the number of sections per side.

Wood Screw If you choose to mount the product on a wooden surface, screws for this purpose are included. The screw is made of hardened steel and, for outdoor use, is also surface-treated with Corrseal—Corrosivity Class C4. The screw features a milled groove along the shank and one at the tip. This results in a very low screw-in torque in harder wood and minimizes cracking.

Screw for Concrete Mounting If you choose to mount the product on a concrete surface, screws for this purpose are included. The screw is made of hardened steel and, for outdoor use, is also surface-treated with Corrseal—Corrosivity Class C4. Approved for use with cracked concrete, uncracked concrete, and hollow-core slabs.
Also suitable for solid brick, hollow brick, solid Mexi brick, and natural stone. When fastening to materials other than wood or concrete, we recommend contacting your local hardware store.

Aluminum Components
Aluminum posts and other components require minimal maintenance. If stains appear, a mild detergent, water, and a soft cloth are usually sufficient. Do not use products with abrasive properties, acids, or alkaline agents.

Glass
Clean glass surfaces with a window and mirror cleaner and a soft cloth. For stubborn stains, rubbing alcohol may be used. Then clean again with a window and mirror cleaner. Do not use abrasive cleaners on glass.

When you’re assembling your railing, the usage class (A+, A, B, or C) provides an indication of where the railing is suitable for use. The classes are based on current building codes and our own product tests, and take into account the choices you’ve made regarding railing height, section width, details, and so on. You can think of the class as a recommendation to help you make the right choice!

Class A+
An A+-rated railing meets the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning’s requirements for railings with a fall height of more than 3 meters from floor level to ground level, and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and stores. Our A+-rated railings can withstand a minimum linear load of 1 kN/m, and when the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injury in the event of an impact.

Class A
A Class A railing meets the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s requirements for railings where the fall height exceeds 3 meters from floor level to ground level, and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments. Our Class A railings can withstand a minimum linear load of 0.5 kN/m, and where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injury in the event of an impact.

Class B
Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the height difference between the floor and the ground is 0.5–3 meters. Our Class B railings can withstand a minimum linear load of 0.5 kN/m, and when the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent personal injury in the event of an impact.

Class C
Class C railings are suitable for use at ground level. If the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injury in the event of an impact. A railing may also be classified as Class C if Balustrade Store , in consultation with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard design. In such cases, the Class C classification indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.
