Frequently Asked Questions About Flex

Browse our frequently asked questions and answers, or contact one of our specialists, who are always here to help you.

Retractable glass panels, such as Flex, are ideal for outdoor spaces where the weather changes quickly. You can keep them lowered for an unobstructed view on calm days and easily raise them when the wind picks up to create instant shelter from the wind.

Yes, it's one of the most effective wind protection solutions on the market. It combines the functionality of a standard glass railing with the flexibility to adjust the protection as needed, which extends the season on your patio.

The price is primarily determined by the railing’s total length, the type of glass (such as tempered laminated glass), and whether you choose fixed or adjustable modules. The choice of material for the posts (aluminum or stainless steel) and any powder coating also affect the final price.

Some movement may be normal in a tall glass panel, but if it sways significantly, you should check that all screws and clamps are properly tightened. In extreme winds, adjustable glass panels should always be lowered to their lowest position to reduce wind resistance.

Yes, our glass windbreaks can be custom-sized to fit your patio or balcony exactly. You enter the overall dimensions in our configurator, and we’ll calculate the width of each section to ensure a symmetrical and attractive result.

To sit comfortably out of the wind, a height of 1,600–1,800 mm is usually optimal for a fixed windbreak. This is high enough to block the wind even for someone standing up. For a more flexible solution, adjustable glass panels are a fantastic option.

Absolutely, it’s a smart solution for optimizing both cost and functionality. For example, you can choose taller glass panels in the corner where the wind blows the hardest and combine them with a lower, open glass railing on the other sides. This creates a dynamic look and provides effective protection exactly where it’s needed most.

Adjustable glass railings are an innovative solution that combines a fixed glass railing with a movable windscreen. Using gas spring technology, the inner glass panel can be easily raised to provide shelter when the wind picks up, without blocking the view. When the windscreen is not needed, the glass is lowered manually or automatically (depending on the model) to return to its lower position.

Product Information

Height-adjustable glass railing with integrated windbreak

Do you have a patio where the wind often makes it too cold to sit outside? Flex is a height-adjustable glass railing that solves exactly that problem. You get a stylish railing with an unobstructed view, but when the wind picks up, you can easily pull up the upper glass section. In a second, you’ve transformed your railing into an effective windbreak.

What makes Flex unique is that it doesn’t require any electricity. A built-in counterweight allows the glass to be raised and lowered with a light touch. You get the best of both worlds: shelter from the wind when it’s blowing, and an unobstructed view when the sun is shining.

Applications

Flex is ideal for those with a balcony, patio, or poolside area exposed to the wind. It’s also a popular choice for restaurants that want to seat guests outdoors even on windy days.

  • Raise and lower the windshield manually in a stepless manner.
  • No electricity or complicated installation required.
  • Provides shade in seconds without blocking the view.
  • Custom-made to fit your patio exactly.
  • Heavy-duty safety glass that withstands harsh weather conditions.

Flex is the right choice for anyone who wants to stop letting the wind decide when to go inside.

Quality & Safety

Certified Manufacturing

Flex is manufactured at our facility in Ängelholm. By handling both design and production in-house, we ensure that the railings meet the safety requirements for aluminum and glass building products. Each order is custom-made and comes with a declaration of performance.

The manufacturing process is certified in accordance with EN 1090-1 and complies with the applicable Eurocodes for load-bearing capacity. Production is continuously monitored by RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden), which is responsible for external verification of traceability and quality.

We conduct our own tests on materials, fastenings, and mechanical components to ensure long-term performance. The surface treatment provides strong protection against corrosion and wear—designed for long-term use in demanding outdoor environments.

Technical Information

Dimensions, Specifications, and Documentation

Here you'll find technical specifications, dimensions, installation instructions, and performance declarations for Flex.

This information provides a clear picture of how the railing is constructed and helps you plan, compare, and install the right solution for your project.

Technical Details

Width
• Minimum width 500 mm
• Maximum width 2200 mm
Please note that the maximum width may vary depending on wind load conditions in the area and the installation height.

Height
Standard heights:
• 800/1300 mm (lowered position/raised position)
• 900/1500 mm
• 1000/1700 mm
• 1100/1900* mm
• 1200/2100* mm (max width 2000 mm)
For installation more than 2 m above ground level, the railing height must be at least 1100 mm to comply with the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s regulations.

Glass
By default, the movable glass panels are 6 mm safety laminated glass, and the fixed glass panels are 6 mm safety laminated glass

Aluminum Rail As standard, the railing comes with an aluminum rail to protect all horizontal edges of the glass.

Polished Glass Edges
When designing your railing, you can choose to have polished glass edges on the horizontal edges of the glass.

Glass Options
When you design your railing, you also choose the type of glass you want.
• Clear glass
• Opal glass (frosted film between the glass panes, which provides privacy).

Clamp Foot
When installing with the clamp foot, the railing must be mounted 25 mm from the edge on a wooden surface and 50 mm from the edge on a concrete surface. Insert the screw into both screw holes in the foot.

Balcony Bracket When installing using the balcony bracket, position the bracket flush against the edge of the surface. Secure the screws through the lower hole in the balcony bracket and the hole on the top that is farthest from the edge of the surface.

Wood Screw If you choose to mount on a wooden surface, screws for this purpose are included. The screw is made of hardened steel and, for outdoor use, is also surface-treated with Corrseal—Corrosion Class C4. The screw features a milled groove along the shank and one at the tip. This results in a very low tightening torque in harder wood and minimizes cracking. The screw is 80 mm long with a Torx head; a bit is, of course, included with your order. When fastening to materials other than wood or concrete, we recommend contacting your local hardware store.

Concrete Screw If you choose to mount the product on a concrete surface, screws for this purpose are included. The screw is made of hardened steel and, for outdoor use, is also surface-treated with Corrseal—Corrosion Class C4. The concrete screw is 90 mm long and is screwed directly into a pre-drilled hole without a anchor using a 10 mm wrench, which is, of course, included with your order.
Approved for use in cracked concrete, uncracked concrete, and hollow-core slabs. Also suitable for solid brick, perforated brick, solid Mexi brick, and natural stone. When fastening into materials other than wood or concrete, we recommend contacting your local hardware store.

Everything is included in your order
Our shipment includes everything you need for assembly. In addition to the sections and legs, it includes all screws, drill bits, and any special tools required. If you have a screwdriver, a wrench, a folding rule, and a level, you really don’t need anything else.

Assembly Videos and Instructions
The videos show various steps to help you with your assembly. Our assembly tips and videos are customized for each order. In other words, these are not general descriptions but are tailored specifically to your order.

Glass
Clean glass surfaces with a window and mirror cleaner and a soft cloth. For stubborn stains, rubbing alcohol may be used. Then clean again with a window and mirror cleaner. Do not use abrasive cleaners on glass.

When you’re assembling your railing, the usage class (A+, A, B, or C) provides an indication of where the railing is suitable for use. The classes are based on current building codes and our own product tests, and take into account the choices you’ve made regarding railing height, section width, details, and so on. You can think of the class as a recommendation to help you make the right choice!

Class A+
An A+-rated railing meets the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s requirements for railings where the fall height exceeds 3 meters from floor level to ground level, and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and stores. Our A+-rated railings can withstand a minimum linear load of 1 kN/m, and where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injury in the event of an impact.

Class A
A Class A railing meets the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s requirements for railings where the fall height exceeds 3 meters from floor level to ground level, and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments. Our Class A railings can withstand a minimum linear load of 0.5 kN/m, and where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injury in the event of an impact.

Class B
Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the height difference between the floor and the ground is 0.5–3 meters. Our Class B railings can withstand a minimum linear load of 0.5 kN/m, and when the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent personal injury in the event of an impact.

Class C
Class C railings are suitable for use at ground level. If the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injury in the event of an impact. A railing may also be classified as Class C if Balustrade Store , in consultation with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard design. In such cases, the Class C classification indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.
