Frequently Asked Questions About Prime

Browse our frequently asked questions and answers, or contact one of our specialists, who are always here to help you.

A stainless steel glass railing gives a more exclusive and solid feel. It is often the best choice when strength requirements are high and in settings where the specific finish of steel is desired.

However, aluminum is an affordable and extremely low-maintenance option.

The biggest difference lies in durability and maintenance requirements. While a wooden railing requires regular sanding, painting, or oiling to prevent rotting or cracking, a stainless steel railing offers a solid construction that retains its strength for decades. Aesthetically, stainless steel provides a modern, industrial look that doesn’t obstruct the view in the same way that thick wooden slats often do.

What is often called “air rust” is rarely caused by the steel itself, but rather by iron particles from the surrounding environment—such as exhaust fumes, brake dust, or manure—that stick to the surface and begin to corrode. If these particles are left to accumulate, they can damage the stainless steel coating over time, so regular wiping is key.

For outdoor railings, acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316L) is recommended. It provides long-lasting protection against the elements compared to AISI 304, which is best suited for indoor use.

Yes, despite its name, stainless steel can develop what is known as “surface rust.” This consists of iron particles that adhere to the surface and corrode. By choosing the right grade of steel (acid-resistant) and performing simple maintenance a couple of times a year, you can keep the railing free of discoloration.

A stainless steel railing isn't completely maintenance-free, but with the right care, it will stay in good condition for decades. We recommend cleaning it 1–3 times a year with a soft cloth and a mild detergent.

In coastal or urban environments, more frequent maintenance may be necessary to remove salt and particles that can cause surface rust.

Absolutely—it’s one of our most timeless and sought-after combinations. It provides an exclusive frame that complements most architectural styles, while offering an unobstructed view and serving as a reliable windbreak. You can also customize the look by choosing between clear, frosted, or tinted glass.

Use lukewarm water, a mild detergent (dish soap), and a soft cloth. For tougher stains, there are special cleaning products for stainless steel. Always rinse thoroughly with clean water afterward. Never use steel wool or brushes with metal bristles, as these can scratch the surface and actually cause rust.

  • Patio railing – frames the patio and provides wind protection without blocking the view.
  • Balcony railing – adds a stylish touch to the building’s facade with its classic lines.
  • Indoor railing —opens up the space between floors and lets light flood into your home.

Installation

How to Install a Stainless Steel Glass Railing

Installing Prime is easy, even if you've never installed a railing before. You don't need to be a pro or have specialized tools—a standard screwdriver and a level will get you a long way.

Here's how it works:

  1. Measure and mark where the posts should be placed.
  2. Secure the posts to the ground and make sure they are plumb.
  3. Install the clamps, then the glass panels, and tighten them securely.
  4. Finish by installing any crossbars or end caps.

Quality & Safety

Certified Manufacturing

Prime is manufactured at our own production facility in Ängelholm. By handling both design and manufacturing in-house, we have full control over quality, strength, and the safety requirements that apply to railings in exposed environments. Each order is customized according to your specifications and comes with a declaration of performance.

The manufacturing process is certified in accordance with EN 1090-1 and complies with the Eurocodes applicable to load-bearing construction products. Production is continuously monitored by RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden), which is responsible for external verification of traceability and process compliance.

We use only laminated safety glass, which remains intact even if it breaks. Prime undergoes regular load and impact tests to ensure that the railing functions as a safe fall protection system in both private and public settings.

Technical Details

Load-tested posts
The posts have been tested with top and exterior fastenings on wooden substrates and can withstand a load of 0.5–1.0 kN/m.

Round Profiles, Ø 42 mm
Round stainless steel posts with a diameter of 42 mm. For indoor use: AISI 304; for outdoor use: AISI 316.

AISI 304/316 Stainless Steel
If your stainless steel railing is to be installed indoors, use a stainless steel grade designated as AISI 304 for the posts. If, on the other hand, it is to be installed outdoors, use AISI 316 instead, which is acid-resistant stainless steel.

Sheet thickness: 2 mm

Stainless Steel Handrail Round stainless steel handrails (Ø 42 mm). AISI 304 for indoor use and AISI 316 for outdoor use. Fittings are included for any corners. Supplied in full lengths up to 2.4 meters. For an additional charge, handrails up to 4.4 meters are available. For longer lengths, the handrail is supplied in multiple sections that are joined using an elegant pipe connector.

Wooden Crossbeams
Round handrail (Ø 43 mm) in untreated light oak or jatoba (a hardwood with properties and appearance similar to teak). Supplied in full lengths up to 2.4 meters. Up to 3 meters available for an additional charge. For longer lengths, the handrail is supplied in multiple sections that are joined together with a stylish tube connector.

Angles
If there are any corners on the railing, you can bend the wooden crossbar yourself. This ensures a precise fit. Corner fittings are included for stainless steel crossbars at angles greater than 90 degrees.

8.76 mm laminated glass
Two 4-millimeter glass panes with a plastic film in between. If the glass were to break, the plastic film would keep the pieces held together as a single unit. Comes with ground and polished edges.

8.76 mm tempered laminated glass
Same construction as our standard laminated glass, but with two tempered glass panes instead. We recommend this glass for environments where the railing may be exposed to repeated external stresses. Comes with ground and polished edges.

Glass Options (Color)
When you design your railing, you also choose the type of glass you want. You can choose between clear glass or tinted slats in gray or opal (tinted or frosted film between the glass panels).

Indoor Clamp Mounts
If the railing is to be installed indoors, the clamp mounts are made of zinc with a stainless steel finish.

Outdoor Clamp Mounts
If the railing is to be installed outdoors, the clamp mounts—just like the rest of the railing—are made of acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316).

Square or Rounded
When designing your railing, you can choose whether you want square or rounded clamps.

Symmetrical Sections
When you enter your measurements in our configurator, you always enter the edge measurements at the location where you want the railing installed. Our configurator then makes the necessary adjustments. We then customize the section dimensions for your railing so that each section on each side is the same length. In other words, we adapt the railing to your measurements—not the other way around.

Selectable railing height
In the configurator, you can select the height of your railing, ranging from 800 to 1100 mm, measured from the floor to the top of the railing. According to Boverket standards, railings must be 1100 mm high in areas where the risk of a fall exceeds 3 meters.

Customized to the Millimeter When you provide your measurements, we ask that you be precise to the millimeter. We craft your railing to the millimeter so that it fits perfectly in the spot where you want to install it.

Customization for Sloped Ceilings
You can choose to customize your railing to accommodate a sloped ceiling at the beginning or end. We will then manufacture a glass panel with a cut-off corner according to your measurements.

Mounting on top of
The base is secured to the floor with 4 screws.

External Mounting
When choosing external mounting, pole brackets are used. External mounting provides a slightly more stable structure and does not take up any floor space. The pole bracket is mounted flat against the mounting surface.

Top rail with or without wall mounting
If the railing is mounted on a wall, you can also choose to mount the top rail to the wall. This can result in a slightly more stable structure.

Screw for wood fastening, top-mounted
If you choose to mount the product on a wooden surface, screws for this purpose are included. The screw is made of hardened steel and, for outdoor use, is also surface-treated with Corrseal—Corrosivity Class C4. The screw features a milled groove along the shank and one at the tip. This results in a very low screw-in torque in harder wood and minimizes cracking.

Stainless Steel Components
Since stainless steel, despite its name, is not resistant to corrosion, all stainless steel components need to be maintained and cleaned 1–3 times a year. If the railing is installed in a coastal environment, cleaning and treatment may need to be performed more frequently. Clean the surfaces with lukewarm water and a mild detergent using a soft cloth.

Wooden Handrail Crossbar If the railing is to be installed outdoors, we recommend cleaning the crossbar and then sanding it with fine-grit sandpaper. Treat the crossbar with a wood preservative, such as wood oil or a similar product, depending on the prevailing conditions. For indoor installation, only cleaning and light sanding are required. Treatment with wood oil or a similar product can be applied if desired. All oak contains tannic acid in varying amounts, depending on the wood’s moisture content. This is because tannic acid helps prevent the wood from rotting. When your oak crossbar or handrail is exposed to moisture for the first time in an outdoor environment, tannic acid is released, which can cause discoloration on the surface it rests on. Therefore, we recommend oiling the wood or, alternatively, applying oxalic acid during installation to minimize the release of the acid. Oxalic acid can also be used to clean discoloration from the surface. Consult your paint supplier before using oxalic acid. To keep the wood looking its best, we also recommend oiling it once a year.

Glass
Clean glass surfaces with a window and mirror cleaner and a soft cloth. For stubborn stains, rubbing alcohol may be used. Then clean again with a window and mirror cleaner. Do not use abrasive cleaners on glass.

When you’re assembling your railing, the usage class (A+, A, B, or C) provides an indication of where the railing is suitable for use. The classes are based on current building codes and our own product tests, and take into account the choices you’ve made regarding railing height, section width, details, and so on. You can think of the class as a recommendation to help you make the right choice!

Class A+
An A+-rated railing meets the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s requirements for railings where the fall height exceeds 3 meters from floor level to ground level, and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and stores. Our A+-rated railings can withstand a minimum linear load of 1 kN/m, and where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injury in the event of an impact.

Class A
A Class A railing meets the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s requirements for railings where the fall height exceeds 3 meters from floor level to ground level, and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments. Our Class A railings can withstand a minimum linear load of 0.5 kN/m, and where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injury in the event of an impact.

Class B
Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the height difference between the floor and the ground is 0.5–3 meters. Our Class B railings can withstand a minimum linear load of 0.5 kN/m, and when the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent personal injury in the event of an impact.

Class C
Class C railings are suitable for use at ground level. If the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injury in the event of an impact. A railing may also be classified as Class C if Balustrade Store , in consultation with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard design. In such cases, the Class C classification indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.
