Frequently Asked Questions About Tenso

Browse our frequently asked questions and answers, or contact one of our specialists, who are always here to help you.

For a wire railing, a round top rail is often recommended—either in stainless steel for a consistent maritime look, or in wood to soften the industrial aesthetic. The round shape complements the soft lines of the wire and provides a comfortable grip.

A stainless steel railing is made of a homogeneous alloy that is corrosion-resistant throughout. A galvanized railing consists of ordinary carbon steel that has been coated with a thin protective layer of zinc. If the zinc coating on a galvanized railing is scratched, the underlying steel begins to rust immediately, while stainless steel retains its protection even when scratched.

Yes. Glass provides a view and protection from the wind, while wooden handles offer a warm contrast. These combinations are common both indoors and outdoors.

Yes, despite its name, stainless steel can develop what is known as “surface rust.” This consists of iron particles that adhere to the surface and corrode. By choosing the right grade of steel (acid-resistant) and performing simple maintenance a couple of times a year, you can keep the railing free of discoloration.

When designing your wire railing, you can usually choose between 4, 5, or 6 rows of wires. The choice depends on both aesthetics and how dense you want the railing to appear.

According to the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning’s building codes, it is important to remember that horizontal wires can be climbed. For this reason, we often recommend using a greater number of wires (spaced more closely together) to achieve a more symmetrical and substantial appearance, especially on a patio where you want to clearly mark the boundary without obstructing the view.

Safety and durability are paramount, which is why all our cables are made of acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316). This is a top-grade steel that contains molybdenum, enabling it to withstand salt spray and harsh weather conditions without corroding.

It is the same grade of stainless steel used in marine environments, which ensures that your stainless steel railing will retain its strength and luster year after year.

Yes, absolutely! Our entire business model is based on making it easy to install the railing yourself. We deliver your railing custom-made and as much as possible pre-assembled from the factory. You’ll receive clear assembly instructions and have access to instructional videos. Most of our customers choose to install the railing themselves, which saves money on contractors.

No special tools are required beyond what is normally found in a toolbox, such as a screwdriver, a level, and a tape measure.

For outdoor railings, acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316L) is recommended. It provides long-lasting protection against the elements compared to AISI 304, which is best suited for indoor use.

Product Information

Stainless Steel Cable Railing for Patios and Gardens

Tenso is the obvious choice for anyone who wants an unobstructed view without having to clean the glass. It’s a stainless-steel wire railing that creates an open feel on your patio or deck, while requiring minimal maintenance. The system comes as a custom-sized kit, ready to be installed on your patio.

Important: Because the cables are mounted horizontally, it is easy to climb the railing. We therefore recommend Tenso only for low-level environments where there is no requirement for approved fall protection.

Acid-resistant steel for coastal climates

The railing is made of acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316) to withstand salty air and harsh outdoor environments. The sleek design also serves as a partition indoors and can be combined with handrails made of wood or stainless steel.

  • Unobstructed view: Thin wires that are barely visible from a distance.
  • Minimal maintenance: A great option for those who want to avoid having to clean windows.
  • Wind-resistant: Allows wind to pass through, which reduces the load in windy conditions.
  • Custom-made: We manufacture each section according to your exact measurements.
  • Complete kit: Comes with pre-cut steel wire and all necessary fasteners.

How to Install the Tenso Cable Railing

Tenso is delivered as a complete kit, custom-sized to your order. All parts are pre-drilled and ready for installation on wooden decks, concrete, or other flat surfaces. Screws, fasteners, and installation templates are included in the delivery.

Here's how it works:

  1. Mark the location of the posts using the included templates.
  2. Screw the posts into the ground.
  3. Thread the steel wire through the posts and secure them.
  4. Tighten the wires to create a taut, straight line.
  5. Install any crossbars and make a final adjustment.

Mounting Options for Your Project

You select the mounting option directly in the configurator, based on where the rail will be installed:

  • Surface-mounted – for a deck or concrete slab.
  • Side mounting —for example, on a staircase or the side of a balcony.

All options have been tested to ensure they meet safety requirements in various environments and on different surfaces.

Instructional Videos

Below are clips from some of our installation videos. Once you've placed your order, you'll receive links to videos showing how to install the railing with the specific parts you've chosen.

Quality & Safety

Certified Manufacturing

Tenso is manufactured at our facility in Ängelholm. By handling both design and production in-house, we ensure that every railing is of high quality and comes with a declaration of performance that details its technical characteristics.

The manufacturing process is certified in accordance with EN 1090-1, which means that production is continuously monitored by RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) to ensure traceability and quality.

The railing is manufactured exclusively from acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316) to ensure long-lasting durability in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Technical Details

Load-tested posts
The posts have been tested when mounted on top of a wooden base and can withstand a load of 0.5–1.0 kN/m.

Round Profiles, Ø 42 mm
Round stainless steel posts with a diameter of 42 mm. For indoor use: AISI 304; for outdoor use: AISI 316.

AISI 304/316 Stainless Steel
If your cable railing is installed indoors, the posts are made of a stainless steel grade known as AISI 304. If, on the other hand, it is to be installed outdoors, AISI 316 is used instead, which is acid-resistant stainless steel.

Wire, 4 mm diameter
The wires are made of stainless steel with a diameter of 4 mm and are made of acid-resistant AISI 316.

Sheet thickness: 2 mm

Stainless Steel Crossbars
Round stainless steel crossbars (Ø 42 mm). AISI 304 for indoor use and AISI 316 for outdoor use. Fittings are included for any corners.

Wooden Crossbar Round crossbar (Ø 43 mm) in untreated light oak or jatoba (a hardwood with properties and an appearance similar to teak).

Angles
If there are any corners on the railing, you can bend the wooden crossbar yourself. This ensures a precise fit. Corner fittings are included for stainless steel crossbars at angles greater than 90 degrees.

Symmetrical Sections
When you enter your measurements in our configurator, you always enter the edge measurements at the location where you want the railing installed. Our configurator then makes the necessary adjustments. We then customize the section dimensions for your railing so that each section on each side is the same length. In other words, we adapt the railing to your measurements—not the other way around.

Selectable railing height
In the configurator, you can select the height of your railing, ranging from 800 to 1100 mm, measured from the floor to the top of the railing. According to Boverket standards, railings must be 1100 mm high in areas where the risk of a fall exceeds 3 meters.

Customized to the Millimeter When you provide your measurements, we ask that you be precise to the millimeter. We craft your railing to the millimeter so that it fits perfectly in the spot where you want to install it.

Mounting on top of
The base is secured to the floor with 4 screws.

Top rail with or without wall mounting
If the railing is mounted on a wall, you can also choose to mount the top rail to the wall. This can result in a slightly more stable structure.

Wood Screw If you choose to mount the product on a wooden surface, screws for this purpose are included. The screw is made of hardened steel and, for outdoor use, is also surface-treated with Corrseal—Corrosivity Class C4. The screw features a milled groove along the shank and one at the tip. This results in a very low screw-in torque in harder wood and minimizes cracking.

Screw for Concrete Mounting If you choose to mount the product on a concrete surface, screws for this purpose are included. The screw is made of hardened steel and, for outdoor use, is also surface-treated with Corrseal—Corrosivity Class C4. Approved for use with cracked concrete, uncracked concrete, and hollow-core slabs.
Also suitable for solid brick, hollow brick, solid Mexi brick, and natural stone. When fastening to materials other than wood or concrete, we recommend contacting your local hardware store.

Complete Construction Kit Our shipment includes everything you need for assembly. In addition to posts, rails, and crossbars, it also includes all screws, drill bits, and any special tools required. If you have a screwdriver, a wrench, a folding rule, and a level, you really don’t need anything else.

Assembly Videos and Instructions
The videos show various steps to help you with your assembly. Our assembly tips and videos are customized for each order. In other words, these are not general descriptions but are tailored specifically to your order.

Stainless Steel Components
Since stainless steel, despite its name, is not resistant to corrosion, all stainless steel components need to be maintained and cleaned 1–3 times a year. If the railing is installed in a coastal environment, cleaning and treatment may need to be performed more frequently. Clean the surfaces with lukewarm water and a mild detergent using a soft cloth.

Wooden Handrail Crossbar If the railing is to be installed outdoors, we recommend cleaning the crossbar and then sanding it with fine-grit sandpaper. Treat the crossbar with a wood preservative, such as wood oil or a similar product, depending on the prevailing conditions. For indoor installation, only cleaning and light sanding are required. Treatment with wood oil or a similar product can be applied if desired. All oak contains tannic acid in varying amounts, depending on the wood’s moisture content. This is because tannic acid helps prevent the wood from rotting. When your oak crossbar or handrail is exposed to moisture for the first time in an outdoor environment, tannic acid is released, which can cause discoloration on the surface it rests on. Therefore, we recommend oiling the wood or, alternatively, applying oxalic acid during installation to minimize the release of the acid. Oxalic acid can also be used to clean discoloration from the surface. Consult your paint supplier before using oxalic acid. To keep the wood looking its best, we also recommend oiling it once a year.

The distance from the front edge of your top stair to the front edge of your bottom stair.

Selectable railing height
The stair railing is the same height as the rest of the railing.

, Customized to the Millimeter When you provide the measurements for your staircase, we ask that you do so to the millimeter. We craft your railing to the millimeter so that it fits perfectly in the spot where you want to install it.

When you’re assembling your railing, the usage class (A+, A, B, or C) provides an indication of where the railing is suitable for use. The classes are based on current building codes and our own product tests, and take into account the choices you’ve made regarding railing height, section width, details, and so on. You can think of the class as a recommendation to help you make the right choice!

Class A+
An A+-rated railing meets the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s requirements for railings where the fall height exceeds 3 meters from floor level to ground level, and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and stores. Our A+-rated railings can withstand a minimum linear load of 1 kN/m, and where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injury in the event of an impact.

Class A
A Class A railing meets the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s requirements for railings where the fall height exceeds 3 meters from floor level to ground level, and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments. Our Class A railings can withstand a minimum linear load of 0.5 kN/m, and where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injury in the event of an impact.

Class B
Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the height difference between the floor and the ground is 0.5–3 meters. Our Class B railings can withstand a minimum linear load of 0.5 kN/m, and when the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent personal injury in the event of an impact.

Class C
Class C railings are suitable for use at ground level. If the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injury in the event of an impact. A railing may be classified as Class C if Balustrade Store , in consultation with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard design. A Class C classification indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.
