One of the biggest advantages of the stainless steel system is its high degree of customization. During the design phase, the customer can make their own design choices regarding everything from mounting and glass type to the selection of transoms. For projects where a more industrial look is desired, there is also the option to replace the glass panels with horizontal or vertical stainless steel bars.
Adaptations for Stairs and Mezzanine Levels
The project at Fribrocks Bil demonstrates the system’s flexibility by combining straight sections on the mezzanine level with a flexible indoor staircase railing. Installing a glass railing on a staircase requires extreme precision to ensure that the angles are correct and that the top rail runs smoothly along the entire structure.
When choosing a header, there are several options to match the rest of the interior:
- Stainless steel: For a cohesive and modern look.
- Wood (oak or jatoba): To add warmth and an organic feel to the design.
- Without a top rail: For a more minimalist look, where the glass either ends at the same height as the posts or is allowed to extend slightly above them for a more open feel.
Technical Specifications and Installation
The choice of material is critical for a railing in a car showroom to withstand daily wear and tear and meet safety requirements. Our stainless steel posts can be installed in two ways, depending on the floor’s construction:
- Surface-mount installation: The post is mounted directly on the floor surface using a base and a cover for a sleek finish.
- Surface mounting: The post is attached to the side of the joist with a post bracket, a method often used to save valuable floor space.
Although this project was carried out indoors, the material is suitable for an outdoor railing because the stainless steel is very durable. For outdoor installation, it is also possible to add windbreaks to selected sections using panels that are 80 cm wide and up to 180 cm high.
Safety Glass and the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning's Building Regulations
Safety is paramount when installing a glass railing on a mezzanine level where people are present. Fribrocks Bil received a delivery of 8.76 mm laminated safety glass. Laminated glass consists of two glass panes bonded together with a plastic interlayer. If the glass breaks, the interlayer ensures that the glass remains intact as a single unit, reducing the risk of injury.
The glass is always delivered with ground and polished edges. For environments subject to particularly high stress, we also offer tempered laminated glass. When designing a railing, it is also important to ensure compliance with the prescribed railing height. To meet the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s (Boverket) building regulations (BBR) in public environments with fall heights exceeding three meters, a minimum height of 1,100 mm is required.
