The top rail is the part of the railing you come into contact with most often in everyday life. That’s where your hand rests—and yet it’s often chosen only after the rest of the railing has already been decided.

The choice affects more than just the appearance. The material, profile, and dimensions determine how the handrail feels to use, how easy it is to grip, and how well the finish complements the rest of the structure.

The most important thing is to first distinguish between a handrail—which should be grippable—and a top rail, which primarily serves to cap off the railing at the top. After that, choosing the material and profile becomes much easier.

Profile and Dimensions

The profile determines the grip, and the grip determines whether the railing feels secure.

A good rule of thumb: The crossbar should cover the posts and the infill without being wider than the structure requires. A profile that is too wide looks bulky, while one that is too narrow provides less grip and may leave the structure more exposed to rain.

For longer spans without intermediate posts, the crossbeam must be dimensioned so that it does not bend noticeably under load. An aluminum profile with internal reinforcement can provide high rigidity without making the profile appear bulky.

Installation

How the top rail is attached depends on the railing system. The important thing is that the attachment is secure and that joints, corners, and ends are planned out before installation begins.

    If the hand is supposed to follow the contour for support—for example, on a staircase—you need to think of it as a handrail. If the contour is primarily intended to form the top of the railing, it’s a top rail.
