Frequently Asked Questions About Glass Railings

It's hard to know everything about glass railings, but we do. Browse our frequently asked questions and answers, or contact one of our specialists, who are always there to help you.

Your choice depends on your budget, the style of your home, and technical requirements. For high drop heights, greater safety is required and a minimum height of 110 cm is needed, while at ground level you have more flexibility. Also consider whether you need privacy (opal glass) or if you want maximum transparency (clear glass).

The choice of mounting method depends on the style of the railing, the nature of the surface, and your personal preferences. For a discreet look, people often choose a base profile or point mounts. For a more classic design that’s easy to install, posts with clamp mounts are the most common choice.

The price depends on the dimensions, model, and options selected. The total price is displayed immediately in the configurator. We also offer professional installation in select locations in Sweden.

For modern homes with clean lines, a post-free glass railing or an aluminum railing in black or anthracite gray is the best choice. A stainless steel railing with wire cables also creates an industrial and trendy look. The goal is often for the railing to be perceived as a natural and discreet extension of the home’s architecture.

Our glass railings are designed to withstand strong winds, provided they are installed correctly. For locations exposed to wind or at great heights, we always recommend tempered laminated glass for extra strength and stability.

Yes, glass has a certain degree of natural elasticity and can flex slightly under load, such as strong wind pressure. However, it is important that the railing’s design and the glass thickness are properly dimensioned so that the movement does not become so great that the glass is damaged or pops out of its mountings. For a stable glass railing, tempered laminated glass is often used, as it provides the highest possible rigidity.

Absolutely. A glass windbreak takes up very little space and is perfect for making a small, windy balcony more usable. Since the glass is transparent, you retain the feeling of space even though it shields you from the wind.

We provide clear instructions and videos to make DIY railing installation easier for you.

Safety-rated glass railings – manufactured in Sweden since 2008

Investing in a glass railing is one of the most effective ways to create a modern and airy atmosphere—whether it’s for a patio, balcony, indoor staircase, or pool area. By choosing glass, you preserve the view and maximize natural light while also providing functional wind protection for your outdoor space.

At Balustrade Store , we manufacture each system based on your unique millimeter-precise measurements in our own factory in Ängelholm—our manufacturing process is certified by RISE in accordance with EN 1090-1:2009+A1:2011. Instead of standard systems that are cut to size on-site, we deliver a technically engineered kit that is custom-designed to fit your specific installation surface perfectly.

Glass railings for patios, balconies, stairs, pools, and French balconies

Our glass railings are designed to work in any environment where safety, design, and an unobstructed view are important. Here are the most common applications:

  • Glass railings for patios —the best-selling choice in Sweden. Enjoy the view of your garden, the lake, or the ocean while meeting the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning’s requirements for fall protection.
  • Glass railings for balconies —especially popular in condominium associations, where privacy, wind protection, and safety must all be addressed in a single design.
  • Glass stair railing – an indoor glass railing opens up the staircase, allows light to pass between floors, and provides natural fall protection in accordance with BBR.
  • Glass railing for a French balcony —for doors without a projecting floor where the glass serves as the primary fall protection. This requires 12.76 mm of tempered and laminated glass.
  • Glass pool railing – meets the legal requirement for a physical barrier around the pool and also serves as a windbreak.
  • Glass railings for commercial environments —for hotels, restaurants, and public spaces where strength and documentation requirements are higher.

Post-free glass railing or railing with posts—how to choose the right system

To find the right glass railing, it’s important to consider where the railing will be installed and the style you’re aiming for. By combining different posts, glass types, and handrails, you can create a unique setting for your space.

  • Post-free glass railing for an unobstructed view: For a completely unobstructed view of the surroundings, our Vista system is the obvious choice. Here, the glass is slid into an aluminum profile along the joists and becomes the load-bearing element of the entire railing. The result is a minimalist and exclusive solution where the glass takes center stage—perfect for modern balconies, rooftop terraces, and patios with a view.
  • Aluminum railing with glass: With Arcus, you get a sturdy, maintenance-free outdoor glass railing with a clean, defined frame. The powder-coated finish provides extremely durable protection that withstands the Nordic climate without the need for repainting. Available in RAL colors such as white, gray, black, and anthracite.
  • Stainless Steel Glass Railings: Our Prime system offers a timeless and robust look and is well-suited for both modern and industrial-style properties. For coastal environments, lakeside properties, and pool areas, we use acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316) to ensure a long service life despite salt spray and moisture.

Frosted glass railing – privacy and wind protection in a single design

One of the most popular uses for glass railings on balconies and patios is to provide privacy from neighbors and passersby. Our frosted glass railing (opal laminated glass) blocks the line of sight without blocking out the light—and also serves as an effective windbreak that lets you sit outside even when it’s windy.

Frosted glass railings are therefore a popular choice in apartment buildings, where privacy screening and wind protection for balcony railings often need to be addressed in a single design. To further enhance privacy, you can also choose gray (tinted) glass, which provides gentle sun protection and a stylish look against dark facades.

Railing Height and Regulations According to the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning (BBR) for Glass Railings

A common concern when installing glass railings is building codes and child safety. We follow the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning’s (Boverket) building codes (BBR) for fall protection to ensure that your installation is safe for the whole family and meets Swedish safety requirements.

According to current regulations for glass railings, a railing height of at least 1,100 mm is required for fall heights exceeding 3 meters (which almost always applies to balconies and rooftop terraces), while 900 mm is the minimum height for ground-level patios and outdoor seating areas. No vertical openings in the railing may exceed 100 mm where children under 12 years of age are present.

Safety is also a key factor in the choice of materials. We exclusively use laminated safety glass in all our railing systems—two glass panes bonded together with a strong PVB plastic film. If, against all odds, the glass were to shatter, the shards would remain trapped in the film, preventing both falls and cuts. For pool areas, wind-exposed locations, and French balconies, we recommend 12.76 mm tempered and laminated glass for extra strength.

Glass railing price per meter and easy installation

We know that transparency regarding costs is important when planning a construction project. In our 3D configurator, you can see the price per meter of your glass railing right away as you design the project with details such as the Lira handrail. By configuring the design yourself, you gain full control and can see exactly how different choices—glass color, frosted glass (privacy protection), post type, or mounting system—affect the final price. The price of a glass railing is primarily determined by the type of glass (8.76 mm laminated glass is the most affordable, while 12.76 mm tempered and laminated glass is more expensive), the choice of system (Vista, Arcus, or Prime), and the total running meters.

Many of our customers choose to install the product themselves. When your order leaves our factory, it’s a complete kit that includes everything—from the custom-cut glass and posts to the smallest screw. With the help of our personalized installation instructions and instructional video guides, you can achieve a professional result, whether you’re installing a glass railing on a wooden deck, securing the posts in concrete, or adapting the system to a specific facade design. If you need help with installation, we can also recommend installation services through our partners throughout most of Sweden.

With Balustrade Store , you get a sustainable investment that combines Swedish quality with modern design—design your glass railing using the configurator above or contact our customer service for advice before placing your order.
