It varies depending on the glass, color, and mounting method—but French balconies are usually smaller in size, which results in a lower total price.

Choose a railing that offers a high level of safety and has small openings. Glass or vertical bars are common options. The dimensions must comply with BBR requirements.

For high wind loads, public spaces, pool areas, or exposed balconies, tempered laminated glass (8.76–12.76 mm) is recommended for added durability.

We provide clear instructions and videos to make DIY railing installation easier for you.

Yes, you can customize the appearance of your glass railing to suit your preferences. We offer clear glass for maximum visibility, opal glass for effective privacy, and gray-tinted glass that provides stylish sun protection and a modern look.

The installation process consists of a few logical steps: first, measure where the posts should be placed and mark the drilling locations. Once the posts are securely anchored in the ground, install the infill—whether it’s glass, wire, or rods. Finally, attach the top rail, which ties the structure together and gives the railing its final stability and style.

You’ll usually need standard tools such as a screwdriver, a level, a tape measure, and Allen wrenches. When installing in concrete, you’ll also need a hammer drill. We always specify in our instructions exactly which tools are required for your specific model.

Product Information

French balcony made of glass or aluminum

Lumo is a French balcony made of laminated glass or powder-coated aluminum—a fixed safety railing that lets in light without taking up space on the facade. It is installed in front of full-height doors or windows and serves as fall protection where there are differences in floor levels, while also helping to create a brighter atmosphere indoors.

Each balcony is custom-made and delivered as a complete solution. The glass version offers a light and understated look, while the aluminum version has a more framed appearance inspired by classic wrought iron. The materials require no ongoing maintenance.

For full-height doors and windows

Lumo is used wherever you want to open up a space and let in light—without extending the structure beyond the facade.

  • Doesn't take up any space outside the building
  • Protects windows and doors that open
  • Available in glass or aluminum
  • Maintenance-free design
  • Suitable for modern and classic buildings

Lumo is a well-thought-out solution where function and form go hand in hand.

Installation

How to Install a French Balcony

Lumo is designed to be easy to install, even for those who have never done it before. Each French balcony is delivered as a complete solution—with all the parts you need: brackets, screws, bits, and components tailored to the model you’ve chosen.

The balcony is mounted directly to the facade or window frame, depending on the wall type and design. The glass model is secured with discreet stainless steel point fasteners, while the aluminum version is mounted using narrow posts with pre-drilled holes.

Here's how to assemble it:

  1. Measure the opening where the balcony will be installed
  2. Install the brackets on the facade or window frame
  3. Secure the glass or aluminum railing in place
  4. Check for stability and complete the installation

Would you rather not install it yourself? In many parts of Sweden, we offer an installation service through our partners. Learn more about the installation service here »

Quality & Safety

Certified Manufacturing

Lumo is manufactured at our production facility in Ängelholm. By designing and manufacturing our products in-house, we have full control over quality, strength, and the safety requirements that apply to balcony railings and guardrails for height differences. Each order is customized to your specifications and comes with a declaration of performance.

The manufacturing process is certified in accordance with EN 1090-1 and complies with the Eurocodes applicable to load-bearing construction products made of glass and aluminum. Production is continuously monitored by RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden), which is responsible for external verification of traceability and process compliance.

In addition, we conduct our own load and impact tests to ensure that every safety railing functions properly—whether it is installed on high windows or doors. The materials are selected to withstand the Nordic climate and minimize the need for maintenance.

Technical Information

Dimensions, Specifications, and Documentation

Here you’ll find technical information about Lumo —our French balcony made of laminated glass or powder-coated aluminum. We’ve compiled details on dimensions, fasteners, and installation methods to help you plan and compare options.

All files are available for download as PDFs and will help you prepare your order or perform a safe and proper installation.

Technical Details

Square posts, 50×50 mm
Square aluminum posts measuring 50×50 mm with a wall thickness of 2.5 mm. Our aluminum profiles are anodized. This is the same principle used for the mast on a sailboat, which is resistant to wind and weather.

Stainless Steel Fixpoints
For exterior installation, we use stainless steel fixpoints made of acid-resistant steel (AISI 316). They are installed with screw pins.

12.76 mm tempered and laminated glass
Same construction as our standard laminated glass, but with two tempered glass panes instead. We recommend this glass for environments where the railing may be subjected to repeated external stresses. Comes with ground and polished edges.

Glass Options (Color)
When designing your railing, you also choose the type of glass you want. You can choose between clear glass or tinted slats in gray or opal (tinted or frosted film between the glass panels)

Aluminum Top Rail A U-shaped aluminum profile (20×30 mm) is attached to the top of the glass with adhesive. Surface coating: 20 µ.

Selectable railing height
In our design tool, you can choose the height of your French balcony—either 1,000 or 1,100 mm (measured from the floor to the top of the railing). 1,100 mm is the height required by Boverket standards for railings in areas where the risk of falling exceeds 3 meters.

Mounting Dimensions
When you enter your measurements in our design tool, enter the center-to-center (c-c) measurement of the mounting for your French balcony.

Customized to the Millimeter When you provide your measurements, we ask that you be precise to the millimeter. We craft your railing to the millimeter so that it fits perfectly in the spot where you want to install it.

Mounting with fixpoints
Stainless steel fixpoints mounted on the outside with screw pins.

Installation with aluminum posts
The posts are secured with two screws on the side, directly against the mounting surface.

Screw for mounting on wood – fixpoint
Screws for mounting on wood are included with fixpoints. When mounting on other materials, we recommend contacting your local hardware store.

Screw for wood fastening – aluminum posts
With aluminum posts, you can choose between wall mounting for wood or concrete. If you choose to mount on a wooden surface, screws for this purpose are included. The screw is made of hardened steel and, for outdoor use, is also surface-treated with Corrseal—Corrosion Class C4. The screw features a milled groove along the shank and one at the tip. This results in a very low tightening torque in harder wood and minimizes cracking.

Screw for concrete mounting – aluminum posts
With aluminum posts, you can choose between wall mounting for wood or concrete. If you choose to mount on a concrete surface, screws for this purpose are included. The screw is made of hardened steel and, for outdoor use, is also surface-treated with Corrseal – Corrosivity Class C4.
Approved for use with cracked concrete, uncracked concrete, and hollow-core slabs. Also suitable for solid brick, perforated brick, solid Mexi brick, and natural stone. When mounting on materials other than wood or concrete, we recommend contacting your local hardware store.

Everything is included with your order
Our shipment includes everything you need for assembly. In addition to posts, glass, and crossbars, it also includes all screws, drill bits, and sockets, as well as any special tools. If you have a screwdriver, a wrench, a folding rule, and a level, you really don’t need anything else.

Assembly Videos and Instructions
The videos show various steps to help you with your assembly. Our assembly tips and videos are customized for each order. In other words, these are not general descriptions but are tailored specifically to your order.

Aluminum Components
Aluminum posts and other components require minimal maintenance. If stains appear, a mild detergent, water, and a soft cloth are usually sufficient. Do not use products with abrasive properties, acids, or alkaline agents.

Stainless Steel Components
Since stainless steel, despite its name, is not resistant to corrosion, all stainless steel components need to be maintained and cleaned 1–3 times a year. If the railing is installed in a coastal environment, cleaning and treatment may need to be performed more frequently. Clean the surfaces with lukewarm water and a mild detergent using a soft cloth.

Glass
Clean glass surfaces with a window and mirror cleaner and a soft cloth. For stubborn stains, rubbing alcohol may be used. Then clean again with a window and mirror cleaner. Do not use abrasive cleaners on glass.
