Sometimes all a balcony needs is the right color on the right material to enhance the look of the entire house. In this client project, we show how a glass railing made of powder-coated black aluminum frames a classic detached-house balcony—and why the combination of white and black continues to be Scandinavian architecture’s most reliable design choice.
The starting point: a balcony that needs to be framed without being weighed down
This property combines a white stucco facade with black window frames and a classic gable roof—a modern take on the traditional Skåne villa. The balcony above the entrance gives the house both a sense of proportion and a usable outdoor space, but it needed a railing that would serve both as a safety barrier and as an architectural feature.
The challenge in this type of project is easy to articulate but difficult to solve: the goal is to have a glass balcony railing that meets all safety requirements, withstands the Nordic climate without requiring ongoing maintenance—and at the same time blends into the facade’s design rather than introducing a competing visual element.
The Solution: Glass railing made of powder-coated black aluminum
We chose Forma, our aluminum glass railing system in which powder-coated aluminum profiles support the glass panels along the entire edge of the balcony. It is a durable and maintenance-free design engineered to withstand the Nordic climate without repainting or other ongoing maintenance—rinsing it with water 1–2 times a year is enough to preserve the finish for decades.
The profiles and posts were powder-coated in RAL 9005 (jet black) to perfectly match the building’s black window frames and sheet metal details. The result is a black aluminum glass railing that picks up on the facade’s existing dark elements and reinforces them as an architectural theme. The glass is tempered and laminated safety glass, which both meets the fall protection requirements according to the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s building regulations and retains its transparency year after year.
Why a black aluminum glass railing works well against a white facade
The combination of black and white isn’t a new concept—but it works for a specific reason that’s worth understanding when you’re planning your own glass balcony railing.
On a white-plastered villa, the details are created almost exclusively through contrast. Window frames, gutters, soffits, and metal trim in dark colors serve as the house’s “outline.” When you add a balcony railing in exactly the same shade of black, you continue that outline in a natural progression—rather than introducing a new color that risks competing for attention.
Powder coating plays a key role here. Unlike painted iron or steel solutions, powder coating on aluminum retains its color intensity for decades, even in areas exposed to UV radiation, which means the home’s visual cohesion is maintained over time. You also avoid the constant repainting that a traditional wrought-iron railing would require.
Height, Rules, and Technical Details
For a balcony with a fall height of less than three meters, the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning (Boverket) requires a railing height of at least 900 mm, but for balconies with a greater fall height, a minimum of 1,100 mm is required. All of our design specifications comply with the Building Regulations (BBR), and the 100-mm rule ensures that no openings in the structure are larger than ten centimeters—which is crucial for child safety. The glass in the Forma system is tempered and laminated safety glass. This means that if, against all odds, the glass were to shatter, the shards would remain adhered to the inner plastic film, eliminating the risk of falls and cuts.
From Concept to Final Installation
The entire process for this type of project begins in our 3D configurator, where the customer enters the balcony’s dimensions and sees the price update in real time. Once the order is complete, the entire kit is manufactured at our factory in Ängelholm, with all aluminum profiles cut to the millimeter, the glass cut to fit the exact opening, and all mounting holes pre-drilled.
For installation on balconies, we offer various mounting options depending on the surface—surface-mounted installation on a concrete slab, side-mounted installation on a wooden edge beam, or surface-mounted installation on a steel beam. Each order comes with personalized installation instructions based on the customer’s specific blueprint, as well as video guides that walk you through the process step by step.
