This outdoor project demonstrates how a stainless steel cable railing from our series Tenso can frame both a staircase and a deck in a discreet and functional way. The railing follows the edge of the deck around the corner and continues seamlessly along the exterior staircase—a practical solution that provides safety without feeling confining.
The horizontal wires create an airy look and preserve the view of the garden, while also preventing falls from both the stairs and the patio. The posts are made of brushed stainless steel, which makes the railing resistant to weather and moisture—a good choice for the Nordic climate.

Stair railing + balcony railing in the same system—why it’s better
A common question when building a deck is how to handle the railing where the deck meets the stairs. Combining two different railing brands often results in visible joints and differing profile dimensions. Specifying the same railing system for both the deck and the stairs, however, creates a continuous visual line from the deck’s highest point down to the lowest step of the stairs.
It is also at the transition between the deck and the stairs that the details of the railing become particularly important. When the posts and cables follow the same line throughout the entire design, the outdoor space feels more cohesive. In this project, the horizontal cables follow the edge of the deck before continuing down along the stairs, creating a smooth transition between two areas used in different ways. The railing marks the difference in level without creating a heavy barrier toward the garden.
Furthermore, its placement directly against the decking makes the staircase feel like an integral part of the patio, rather than a separate addition. The open wire railing allows the greenery and light to remain visible from the patio, while the structure provides a clear frame as one moves between the patio and ground level. The result is a cohesive outdoor environment with clean lines, where the railing complements the wooden surfaces and the home’s aesthetic without dominating the overall design. It also creates a serene focal point when viewed from the garden.
The handrail on an outdoor staircase must be located 900 mm from the front edge of the step (or equivalent), be easy to grip (diameter 30–50 mm), and extend 300 mm beyond the top and bottom steps. Round or oval profiles meet this requirement—square or flat profiles do not.
Outdoor Wooden Railings – Why Stainless Steel Works So Well with Decking
On a wooden staircase with decking, stainless steel serves as a counterpoint to the organic character of the wood. The brushed stainless steel surface does not reflect light harshly, ages with a soft patina, and does not interfere with the decking’s own color evolution over the years. The wood is allowed to develop freely—the frame does not need to keep up.
