Vista – post-free glass railing made of laminated safety glass
The railing in this project is Vista —our post-free glass railing system in which the laminated safety glass is mounted in a side-mounted metal profile without vertical posts along the front. The glass is laminated safety glass, designed to meet fall protection requirements without vertical supports. A discreet metal top rail runs along the edge of the glass, serving both as protection for the glass and as a visual marker aligned with the balcony’s geometry.
Side fastening in the load-bearing wooden structure
The railing is mounted with metal side brackets directly into the deck’s load-bearing wooden structure. This mounting method maximizes the deck’s usable space—the posts do not protrude above the deck’s surface and take up no floor space. The glass begins at the edge of the deck and extends up to the required fall protection height, causing the railing to almost blend into the deck’s silhouette when viewed from the side.
The side-mounted installation is particularly popular on wooden decks where the joists are visible or where the deck has an architectural line that should be preserved intact. The railing appears to be part of the deck’s structure rather than an addition to it.
Clear Laminated Glass—Why It Works on a Terrace with a View
The glass in Vista is laminated safety glass, which consists of two layers of glass with a plastic film in between. Should the glass ever shatter, the fragments are held together by the film—the glass does not fall out. It is the safest type of glass for railings where there is a risk of falling from a height, and one of the reasons laminated glass is used in post-free solutions where the glass is supported without vertical supports.
Clear glass (without tinting or frosting) is the top choice for a patio with a view of the garden or nature. It allows the entire view to be seen without distorting it, and enhances the sense of connection with the surrounding environment.

Safety and Rules
Vista complies with the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s building codes for fall protection. For fall heights exceeding 1.0 meter, a railing height of at least 1,100 mm is required, and the railing must be able to withstand the horizontal load specified by the regulations. The laminated safety glass is designed to meet these requirements.
A post-free railing like the Vista, with side mounts attached to the deck joists, requires that the joists be deep enough and structurally sound. An older deck where the joists are weakened or where the wood has begun to settle may need to be reinforced before installation. Three Questions to Consider Before Installing a Post-Free Glass Railing on a Wood Deck
- How is the joist system constructed? Side mounts typically require a joist height of 100–150 mm to be screwed into.
- Would you like a top rail above the glass? A discreet top rail provides a visual finish to the glass and extra protection for the edge. Some people choose to leave it out for a truly minimalist look.
- Clear or tinted glass? Clear glass is the standard choice for viewing terraces. Tinted (smoked) glass reduces light and is suitable for west-facing locations where the sun is low in the afternoon.
What happens to the railing over time?
Laminated safety glass is resistant to temperature fluctuations in Sweden and is not affected by UV radiation. The only change you’ll notice over the years is that the glass may develop superficial scratches if rough objects scrape against it—such as garden furniture placed too close to it. These scratches do not affect the glass’s strength.
The metal rail profile that holds the glass in place is designed to be completely protected from the weather during installation. It is advisable to inspect the anchor points once a year, especially if the deck settles slightly over time or if the winter months have been unusually harsh. An inspection takes about a minute per section: check that the screws are tight, that the seals are intact, and that no debris has accumulated in the track profile. For wooden decks where the wood is still settling (during the first 2–3 years), it’s worth checking more frequently to ensure that no gaps develop at the side fasteners.
Maintenance – minimal and straightforward
Glass railings are among the easiest outdoor railings to maintain. Recommendation:
- Clean the glass with regular window cleaner 3–4 times per season, more often during pollen season or after rainstorms.
- Wipe down the side mounts with a microfiber cloth as needed.
- After winter, check the track profile to make sure it hasn't accumulated debris or moisture that could block drainage and affect the fit of the glass over time.
