Do you need a building permit for your large patio?
A common question is whether the project requires a building permit for a deck. Generally speaking, a deck is exempt from the building permit requirement if it is built directly adjacent to a single-family or two-family home, is located within 3.6 meters of the facade, and is no higher than 1.8 meters above ground level.
It is important to note, however, the distinction between a fence and a board fence. A see-through railing (at least 50% open) usually does not require a building permit, but if you build a solid privacy screen that is taller than 1.1 meters, it may be classified as a fence, which often requires a building permit—especially if it is placed closer than 4.5 meters to the property line without your neighbor’s written consent. Always check with your local building authority to confirm the requirements of your zoning plan before beginning construction.
