The color scheme is the first thing most people notice when we show them this balcony railing. It’s a classic wrought-iron railing in our Retro model, but finished in a soft green shade instead of the usual black or white. This color choice allows the railing to blend seamlessly into the broader color palette of the facade—shutters, door frames, and the greenery surrounding the house.
Painted Outdoor Wrought-Iron Railing—Why It Works So Well on a Balcony
The wrought-iron railing is one of the few types of railings where the choice of color is not merely a technical decision but a clear design choice. The vertical slat design makes the railing understated enough to accommodate a more distinctive color without dominating the facade. A glass or cable railing in the same color would have felt heavy—on the wrought-iron railing, the color brings life to a form that is otherwise classic and understated.
Green is one of the colors that works particularly well with wood, stucco facades in natural tones, and older homes where plain black or white might feel too stark. The powder coating in the RAL color system provides a smooth, durable finish that won’t chip or need repainting, and that withstands Swedish winters without rusting.
Retro as a Balcony Railing – The Material Behind the Look
The railing in this project is our Retro model, made of powder-coated aluminum. The aluminum provides the classic design of a wrought-iron railing—vertical balusters between the top rail and intermediate rails—without the traditional maintenance requirements of a wrought-iron railing. It does not rust, does not need to be repainted, and does not lose its color over the years.

Safety and the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s Requirements for Balcony Railings
All balcony railings in Sweden are subject to the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning’s building regulations (BBR). If the fall height exceeds 1.0 meter, the railing must be at least 1,100 mm high, and the openings between the rails must not exceed 100 mm—this is required to prevent a child’s head from getting stuck. Retro meets these requirements as standard.
Dark colors absorb more heat than light ones. On a balcony facing due south, a black railing can get hot to the touch in the middle of summer. Green, beige, and muted tones are often more practical to touch in exposed locations—and they usually age better visually than pure primary colors.
Three Questions to Consider Before Placing an Order
- What color are the shutters, the door, and the roof details? The wrought-iron railing on the balcony will look more striking if it ties in with an existing detail rather than standing out on its own.
- Is the drop height above or below 1.0 meter? That determines whether you need a minimum height of 1,100 mm or if 900 mm is sufficient. Measure from the balcony floor down to the ground.
- Should the railing be mounted on the outside of the balcony edge or on the balcony floor? An exterior mount frees up floor space and creates the classic “projecting” line when viewed from the side—and works especially well for wrought-iron railings like the Retro.
Wrought-Iron Railing as a Focal Point—When Color Becomes a Signature Feature
A painted wrought-iron railing is something of a signature feature on a facade. It stands out from the street, from the garden, and to the neighbors. That’s exactly why it’s worth giving it some thought before choosing a color: is this a color you’ll still want to see on your balcony in 15 years? Classic colors (black, white, green, blue) typically age better than trendy colors (rust, terracotta, olive) because they aren’t tied to a specific decade. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be bold—just that choosing a color deserves the same care as choosing materials.
Here’s a tip from us: take a photo of the house in evening light and in morning light, and hold the RAL color chart up against the facade in both. Colors often look noticeably different depending on the angle of the sun.
